The passing of Justice Mohamed Khadhar Ibrahim marks the end of a remarkable journey in Kenya’s legal history. Justice Ibrahim made history as the first member of the Kenyan-Somali community to be admitted as an Advocate of the High Court in 1983. In 1990, his challenge to President Daniel arap Moi’s government led to his detention without trial for a month, a testament to the courage that would define his professional life. Appointed a High Court judge in 2003 and later elevated to the Supreme Court in 2011, Justice Ibrahim was widely seen as a reform-minded jurist. He approached the bench with openness and humility, never succumbing to the aloofness that sometimes characterizes the judiciary.
